CUPB celebrated International Human Rights Day with an Invited Lecture
11th December, 2020, Bathinda: To commemorate the International Human Rights Day, the Central University of Punjab’s Department of Law under the guidance of Vice Chancellor Prof. Raghavendra P. Tiwari organised an Invited Lecture by Prof. Davinder Singh, Department of Laws, Punjab University Chandigarh.
The programme commenced with the welcome address by Prof. Tarun Arora, Dean, School of Legal Studies where he introduced keynote speaker to participants. He informed that the United Nations theme of Human Rights Day-2020 is to ‘Recover Better – Stand Up for Human Rights’ and appealed the participants to act as promoters by spreading awareness in the society.
While addressing the participants Prof. Davinder Singh stated that the celebration of Human Rights Day will help in spreading awareness about the importance of human rights & to create equal opportunities for all. He discussed in detail about the nature of Human Rights, the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights and our Constitutional Fundamental Rights by referring to various legal case studies. While highlighting the importance of the advancement of human rights to achieve Sustainable Development Goals, he asserted that in the post-COVID-19 world, where the poverty & inequality has increased, respecting ‘Human Rights of All’ will help to end discrimination of all kinds, address inequalities and promote sustainable development. He encouraged Law Students to use the power of law for the welfare of society. During this interactive session, students got satisfactory replies for their queries from the invited speaker.
Towards the end, Dr. Deepak Chauhan, HoD, Department of Law, complimented Prof. Davinder Singh for delivering a scholarly lecture and expressed gratitude towards the invited speaker for motivating the participants to serve society and fulfil the purpose of ensuring peace, dignity, and equality on a healthy planet while eliminating inequalities. He appreciated Dr. Puneet Pathak & Dr. Sukhwinder Kaur for coordinating this event and thanked students their active participation.
